Un chant d'amour

Genet's Un chant d'amour it's an erotic dream, a sexual fantasy, a film that goes about sexual repression, being "caged" and fear. The title may indicate something melodramatic, it's a raw and without censure depiction of masturbation and homoeroticism. With remeniscences of Buñuel's Un chien andalou the filmmaker builds a protest 25 length film against homophobia and tabus about portraying homosexuality in film, that I suppose was bigger during early 50's, that I'm sure was influential. it reminded me to Tsai Ming-liang's ending of The River (1997), which has one of my favorite sexual scenes portrayed in film, ever, that it's a gay one, with a really disturbing context, but Tsai manages to make it breathtaking, not just for the shocking reason, but for the gorgeous cinematography and the implications due the topic of the film. In my humble opinion filming erotism scenes it's something challenging, because it's easy to fall into morbo and/or uncomfortable and unnecessary moment. And for some reason most of the ones I like, are not from straight people. Here, Genet and Cocteau manage to keep the explicit images and also give an erotic tone to strange and metaphorical situations. A must watch short film if you're interested in queer representation in film.
